Upon arriving in town, Nikolai spends his last coin to install Julia at a boarding house before joining the others as they take in the sites. The journey is uneventful, as this stretch of the road is kept safe by Waterdhavian patrols. The next day, the trio sets out for Amphail, a town three days up the Long Road from Waterdeep.
Both men are willing to lend their talents to aid Elvraema on her quest … for the right price, of course.
The other is Nikolai, a conjurer of cheap tricks who has traveled all the way from Damara with his adopted daughter, Julia. One is an Illuskan named Sev Wolfheart, a grizzled mercenary between jobs. She approaches each in turn with trepidation. Scanning the crowd, she spots two likely candidates: both are pale, dark-haired humans with an eager look about them. Whispering a prayer to her mistress, the Dark Maiden, she steps inside the bustling tavern. The half-elf has come to the Yawning Portal in search of help. She knows he’s a dreamer and easily loses track of time but even so … she’d ordinarily have had at least one letter from him describing in great detail what he’d discovered so far! It’s been more than a month since her friend Carn went to check out some ancient elven ruins, and she hasn’t heard from him since.
